COGNITIVE THERAPY
Referrals for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

What is cognitive therapy? Cognitive Therapy or Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is the most validated form of psychotherapy. It evolved from psychological research on basic learning and thinking processes into a powerful intervention that alleviates distress by changing unhelpful or self- defeating patterns of behaviour and thinking.  Put simply, it changes the way we act and think.

CBT could focus on approaching  situations that were previously feared and avoided in order to challenge the basis of the anxiety. CBT could also address unhelpful beliefs or assumptions such as always blaming ourselves when things go wrong, for instance, or believing we are not as good as others.

Typically, a course of cognitive therapy takes between 6-12 sessions. As well as actively addressing personal and emotional issues within each session, the client is encouraged to do therapeutic exercises such as keeping records of upsetting experiences or practicing new coping strategies between sessions.

There are two ways you can arrange a consultation:
  • You can ask for a referral from a health care professional such as your General Practitioner. Just ask for the referral to be faxed, emailed or posted, along with your contact details. Brief details of the reason for the referral is also helpful.
  • A Self-referral. Contact the House Partnership as above. You will be asked to provide an outline of your concerns or problems in order to guide the referral process.

Payment

Fees and methods of payment can be discussed at this stage. Your Health Insurance might cover this, although you will need a referral from your GP or psychiatrist to support your claim. Regrettably, I cannot accept payment by credit or debit cards.
